PREMONITIONS

Premonitions is a model for a 40-100 ft. long public artwork that can sit in any outdoor environment. The mirrored stainless steel allows the work to disappear into the environment around it while remaining an impressive architectural element within it. Interacting with Premonitions will be a different experience for every viewer, with changes in weather, time of day, and season literally reflected on the structure's face. Whether standing inside or outside the tunnel, a viewer will see it and see through it at once. The distorted reflections, meanwhile, will play with perspective and scale much like a fun-house mirror, transforming and reframing the spectator's relationship with the environment around her.

Moving through a tunnel is a linear experience, and in that way, a sort of narrative. The open design of Premonitions, in turn, will expand the narrative of site to include its various neighborhoods, people, and histories while allowing space for individuals to have personal, meaningful experiences with the work.

Premonitions was developed in collaboration with architects Christina Papalexandri & Ilias Papageorgiou, based in Brooklyn, NY.

CONTAINS REAL HARD-WON INSIGHTS

Contains Real Hard-Won Insights is an 8-foot high, painted steel, freestanding text labyrinth that sits within any type of environment. The structure as a labyrinth was inspired by the concept of the intersection of architecture, sculpture and painting, though its open construction suggests a more nuanced experience of both the work itself and the environment around it. Moving through a labyrinth implies a linear experience—a narrative that leads to the center. with Insights, however, a person can walk the linear path while simultaneously experiencing the surrounding environment being reframed before their eyes. Contains Real Hard-Won Insights is a self-enacting text that gives the viewer an opportunity to move from one point of a narrative to another, and meditate on the entwinement of beginnings, ends, and anticipation of the surrounding environment. At once an abstract portrait and a locus for social interaction, Contains Real Hard-Won Insights does not merely inhabit its site but activates it, serving as a conduit for conversation among different groups of visitors and through multiple generations in the neighborhood.

Contains Real Hard-Won Insights was developed in collaboration with architect Victoria Meyers of Hanrahan Meyers architects llP, based in New York City.

OUTDOOR PAINTING
Itch and Smudge are models for public works that apply the fundamental elements of my paintings—language and abstraction—to outdoor installations. The works encourage a dynamic interaction with the viewer, changing along with the natural surroundings and thereby appearing once solid and ephemeral. The above images were taken on-site.
